About this winery

Product notes
The 2017 vintage began with an abundance of rain and moderate spring temperatures that prompted budbreak in late March and early April. With plenty of water in the soil, the vines were off to a vigorous start and continued to thrive under warm summer temperatures. Over Labor Day weekend, a heat spike pushed Napa Valley above 100 ̊F and picked up the pace of ripening, with the first block of our Cabernet Sauvignon harvested on September 9. The weather cooled in mid-late September, creating ideal conditions for developing sugars and flavors and transforming acids and tannins. Fortunately, a majority of blocks were harvested before the Napa Valley fires began in October and the resulting wines highlight the balance and complexity of the 2017 vintage.
Production notes
Our Mount Veeder vines speak a language all their own. Becoming fluent in that language, fully understanding all its subtleties and nuances is the trick to making great wine from mountain vineyards. Over the years, we have come to know the mountain’s contours, dips, and ridges and the sequence of ripening that is the key to it all. A Mount Veeder harvest is a Zen-like art of moving across a three-dimensional chessboard. Take the uphill side of the vine only, or the downhill side, or just the north, south, east, or west section. We pick only what is ready with peak flavor and ripeness. It’s a complex endeavor, carving with precision — matching areas of the vineyard at the same level of ripeness and leaving others to mature another week or more.
Tasting notes
Appearance: Deep ruby Aromas: Wonderfully rich, ripe berries and blackberry cobbler on the nose complemented by hints of earth, cigar box, and dried sage. Flavors: A supple, well-structured palate and full body with a slight mineral edge. Dark cassis fruit and ripe black cherry build complexity with layers of mocha and baking spices. The wine is dry but finishes with a lovely, delicate sweetness derived from its fruit character and 20 months in fine oak barrels.
